The area is a well-established site recognized as a marine park in 2009 by Maldivian government, specially to conserve and protect the Whale Sharks. SAMPA (South Ari Marine Protected Area) the 42 km² reserve is the biggest marine reserve in the Maldives. The location attracts tourists from all around the world and local tour operators from around the country conducts ‘swim with whale shark’ excursions to the reserve.
