Whale Sharks of South Ari Atoll
South Ari Atoll is renowned for its resident population of Whale Sharks that are seen year-round without being dependent on certain seasons as in-case with most other Whale Shark hot-spots around the world. The area is a well-established site recognized as a marine park in 2009 by Maldivian government, specially to conserve and protect the Whale Sharks.
SAMPA (South Ari Marine Protected Area) the 42 km² reserve is the biggest marine reserve in the Maldives. The location attracts tourists from all around the world and local tour operators from around the country conducts ‘swim with whale shark’ excursions to the reserve.

Oceanic Dolphins such as Pilot Whales and False Killer Whales are sighted throughout the year travelling and hunting in the waters of SAMPA.
